The Army Master of Social Work (MSW) Program, conducted in collaboration with the University of Kentucky, is a comprehensive and challenging opportunity for those seeking a career in social work within the U.S. Army. This program spans 14 months of coursework at the University of Kentucky, encompassing 60 semester hours, followed by a 26-month Social Work Internship Program. It’s designed to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge for effectively addressing the unique mental and emotional needs of Army personnel and their families.
Eligibility for the program extends to civilians, officers, and enlisted personnel who aspire to become RA MS Corps Army officers. While a liberal arts undergraduate degree is preferred, the program is open to applicants with various educational backgrounds, provided they have completed at least 18 undergraduate semester hours in behavioral or social sciences and three semester hours of statistics. Academic prowess is also a key criterion, with a minimum requirement of a 3.25 cumulative GPA and a GRE score of 290 or higher. Prospective students nearing the completion of their undergraduate degree must submit a letter from their university dean’s office indicating their academic standing and anticipated graduation date. Additionally, applicants must have received, or be about to receive, their bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution by June in the calendar year they apply.
The multi-faceted application process involves contacting an Army Healthcare Recruiter. Applicants undergo a double selection process: firstly, they must be selected for the MSW Program by the Army accession board, and subsequently, they need to gain admission to the University of Kentucky Graduate School and College of Social Work. The accession board reviews applications around the first week of February each year, and applicants are informed of the results by their Healthcare Recruiter. Following this, they must apply to the U.K. Office of Admission and await their acceptance status.
