HPSP - Clinical Psychology

The Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) for Clinical and Counseling Psychology, offered by the U.S. Army, is a targeted scholarship program for American Psychological Association (APA) accredited clinical or counseling psychology doctoral programs. This program provides one and two-year scholarships, focusing on U.S. citizens advancing their education in these specialized fields of psychology.

A significant aspect of the HPSP for Clinical and Counseling Psychology is its comprehensive financial support. This support includes full tuition coverage for the duration of the scholarship, significantly alleviating the financial burden associated with doctoral-level psychology education. In addition to tuition, the program provides a monthly stipend of over $3,110. This stipend assists students in managing their living expenses and daily financial needs. The program also extends to cover certain academic fees, providing reimbursements to ease the financial commitments of psychology students further.

During their education, HPSP participants also benefit from military training experiences. For 45 days each year, they receive the Active Duty pay of a Second Lieutenant during their Active Duty Training (ADT). This exposure to the military environment offers invaluable experience and insights unique to the Army. Throughout their time in the HPSP program, psychology students are appointed and commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the Medical Service (M.S.) Corps, conferring upon them a respected status within the military.

The Active Duty Obligation (ADO) associated with the HPSP is calculated as half a year for each half-year of scholarship received, with a minimum service commitment of two years. This commitment enables graduates to apply their psychology expertise within the Army context, contributing significantly to Army personnel’s mental health and well-being.

The HPSP in Clinical and Counseling Psychology selection is conducted through a board meeting that convenes once a year, typically in January. This specialized scholarship program not only facilitates the academic and professional development of future Army psychologists but also ensures a commitment to serve in a critical and fulfilling role within the U.S. Army, addressing its service members’ diverse mental health needs.
