Nurse Corps General Qualifications

Candidates must meet several general qualifications to qualify for the Army Nurse Corps, both for the Regular Army and the Army Reserve. Applicants must have experience practicing as a Registered Nurse in the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. Territory. A current, valid, active, and unrestricted R.N. license to practice nursing is mandatory.

Educational qualifications include holding a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or an advanced nursing degree from a program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), or accepted by the National League of Nursing (NLN) for older degrees. For specific specialties like a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, the degree must be accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA). Furthermore, all applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) and, if applicable, hold board certifications for advanced practice nursing roles.

Work experience is also a key consideration. The Army Nurse Corps guidelines recommend that at least one year of work experience in the Area of Concentration (AOC) be applied for, as reviewed by the program manager. For the Regular Army, a minimum of one year of full-time R.N. work experience is required for all AOCs, with specific exclusions noted in mission memos or checklists. Candidates must be working in their AOC at the time of program manager review. For the Army Reserve., applicants should have been practicing full-time as an R.N. for at least six months within the year in their AOC at the time of the review. Additionally, U.S. citizenship or naturalized citizenship is required for the Regular Army, and permanent residency is necessary for the Army Reserve.

For certain AOCs like Critical Care Nursing, a specific certification, such as the Critical Care Registered Nurse, is required.
